Coochiemudlo Island
Delightfully small and with a friendly charm, Coochiemudlo Island is one of the best kept secrets in the Moreton Bay region.
A mere eight minute ferry ride from the mainland departing from Victoria Point, this charming islet and its wonderful laid back ambience will make you feel as though you have traveled a lot further.
Coochiemudlo is the Aboriginal word for ‘red rock’, and red sands are a prominent feature of its landscape in certain parts, with shimmering white sands, and blue water completing a striking vista.
With secluded calm beaches all around the island and its gentle village ambience, Coochiemudlo is a lovely place for families, or for people seeking a day of pure peace and quiet. There are plenty of excellent spots for swimming, boating, jetskiing and fishing around this island, and picnic areas are sprinkled around the beach foreshores.
Kayaking and canoeing, and for children – aqua-paddling (because of the particularly calm surrounding waters) are all popular here. The island is small enough to walk or cycle around with off-road paths extending almost its total perimeter.
Birdwatchers from around the world come to Coochiemudlo Island to see the 250 named species of birds that live and visit, particularly in the protected Melaleuca Conservation Reserve, or amongst the mangroves along the western stretch of the island. And in the calm waters near the shore, dolphins, turtles and sometimes even dugongs can be spotted.
You can play bowls, tennis or golf at the local clubs, too. Golfers can enjoy some of the most spectacular views of the bay on offer.
Coochiemudlo Island has great historical significance with the famous explorer Matthew Flinders landing on the island almost 200 years ago. This historic event is celebrated each July with a festival re-enacting the landing, and a fun day for the local community and visitors. Many references to Flinders are found throughout the island today.
Be sure to explore theFlinders Day Craft Markets for a unique souvenier to take with you from Coochiemudio Island.
