Historical/Indigenous

Moreton Bay is steeped in colonial history, with the bay itself and the islands being the site of the first European settlement in Queensland.

There are many places throughout the region which echo the Brisbane’s historical past. The region boasts beautifully preserved architecture of community buildings and residential homes, significant landmarks and many festivals and events commemorating significant events from our settlement, military and indigenous history.

Ancient indigenous sites, including shell middens and burial grounds, can be found on many of the Bay's islands. These include the remains of a historically gazetted Aboriginal fish trap at Sandstone Point, and a large midden on the banks of Myora Springs, North Stradbroke Island.
