Outdoors & Active4 Wheel Driving Cycling Diving & Snorkelling Other Water Activities Diving & SnorkellingA combination of natural and artificial structures, clear waters with excellent visibility and a pleasant water temperature make Moreton Bay a diving and snorkeling haven to view the incredible array of marine life on display. Hundreds of species of colourful fishes, crustaceans, corals, turtles, and dolphins are found in the area. Scuba diving sites include Cowan Artificial Reef’s coral reefs and nautical wrecks. Flinders Reef’s drop-offs, swim-throughs and ravines form a dramatic landscape popular with scuba divers (two kilometres off Cape Moreton). Moreton Bay’s most popular snorkeling zone is just off-shore from Moreton Island, around the 15 red-rusted, semi-submerged wrecks. Despite being almost extinct from being hunted, grey nurse sharks are known to frequent five Moreton Bay Marine Park sites at Gotham City, Flat Rock, Cherub’s Cave, Henderson Rock and China Wall. Divers are increasingly drawn to these areas to see one of Australia’s most endangered marine animals. Grey Nurse Sharks look fearsome, but are actually quite timid. Another favourite diving companion, and a close relative to the shark, is the Manta Ray, common in these waters during the summer months. Redcliffe, North Stradbroke Island, Moreton Island and Bribie Island have operators offering diving tours and learn to dive courses. And while Clown Fish are not actually native to the Moreton Bay area, several hundred other species of marine life are. Find Nemo yourself! Or at least try. Moreton Bay has several wrecks and reefs in the area providing excellent scuba diving and snorkeling. The reefs surrounding Point Lookout at North Stradbroke Island are home to turtles, dolphins, whales, manta rays and reef fish. The world famous Tangalooma Wrecks off Moreton Island have become an accidental underwater home to a veritable myriad of amazing marine life. No time for the Great Barrier Reef? No worries, Moreton Bay’s world class diving and snorkeling hot spots are so readily accessible … right on Brisbane’s doorstep. Click here for more information on tours operating in Moreton Bay. |
