Koalas

The greater Redlands area is renowned for its large population of koalas. This area contains the largest population of the famous marsupial within the boundaries of a city. There are several reserves throughout the Redlands area where koalas can be spotted. The koala is classified as a vulnerable species in South East Queensland.

Wild koala populations are in serious decline. The koala is only found where there are particular species of its solitary food source – eucalyptus trees. Although the species is found over a geographically large area of eastern Australia, only 'pieces' of koala habitat remain, with the Redlands area being a unique example of this is an essentially urban environment.

Eprapah Reserve and Point Halloran Conservation Reserve, both at Victoria Point are two spots where colonies of koalas can be found in their natural environment in the area. Both feature walking trails, boardwalks and have an interpretive centre.
